Sometimes as I look at a photo of an animal it suddenly seems to have a part grow
in an unexpected and magical way. I can see the lion's mane culminate in leaves
and twigs. A gazelle's horns suddenly sprout lilies at the top,
and a zebra's mane and tail become rich green grasses.
It's as if I am stepping into a world
where animals and plants have evolved in a different and special way.
It's a Mythical Evolution where the animals and their habitat have become one.

The image of a lion's mane changing gradually into leaves presented itself to me as an analogy of how this regal animal's habitat is gradually disappearing. The approaching winter has traditionally represented the end of life, and so it does in this painting, representing the decline of a species. I felt it was equally important to express the dignity and power of this magnificent animal.
